The Johns Hopkins Department of Pediatrics seeks two (2)  Community Health/School Nurse to join the Division of General Pediatrics and Adolescent Medicine.  The nurse will provide care for elementary and middle school students at the Rales Health Center at KIPP Baltimore, which serves approximately 1600+ students in grades K-8. Please note that this is a Casual position in which the nurse will function as a substitute nurse at the Rales Health Center on an as-needed basis.

 

The Ruth and Norman Rales Center for the Integration of Health and Education at Johns Hopkins seeks to redesign school-based health programs to improve the health and academic achievement of children and adolescents from low-income communities. This includes the implementation of an innovative school health program that provides accessible pediatric primary care tailored to the needs of children at KIPP Baltimore.

 

The Rales Health Center is the site for clinical services and provides both school health services (traditional school nurse services) and a school-based health center staffed by a nurse practitioner and pediatrician.  The nurse’s primary responsibilities are for school health services, but s/he has roles in both areas. The school nurse performs a variety of medical care services for patients in a school-based setting.

 

M-F 7:30-3:00 As Needed

$45/hr

 

1 FT/1 PRN position available

Responsibilities

  • Assesses, triages, creates management plans, and treats students presenting for school nurse services. Common complaints include injuries/first aid, asthma exacerbation, headache, GI distress, fever. 
  • Administers prescription medications with a clinician order.
  • Interviews and assesses health needs of individuals and families; analyzes and interprets assessment findings for other health and welfare professionals.
  • Develops nursing care plans for patients receiving nursing services. Collaborates with community based and Rales Health Center clinicians to determine the treatment most beneficial for patient.
  • Explores and determines health care and other options in counseling individuals and families about health and social problems and concerns.
  • Evaluates patient data including plan of care and response to follow up for groups of patients. Plans, develops and evaluates health care presentations to patients and community groups. Counsels and refers persons with complex health problems.
  • Prepares data regarding school health services encounters for local health agencies.

Qualifications

Minimum qualifications (mandatory): Must be a registered nurse, licensed in the State of Maryland or state where practicing.

Those eligible who are under final consideration for appointment will be required to undergo a criminal background investigation. 

 

Preferred qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing or related discipline preferred.
  • Previous experience with school health and/or pediatrics is preferred.

 

Special knowledge, skills, and abilities:

  • Knowledge of the principles, objectives and techniques of community health nursing.
  • Skilled in the delivery of clinical health services to children and early adolescents and experienced working with urban, low income families.
  • Knowledge of nursing theory, process, practices and procedures.
  • Knowledge of professional nursing standards.
  • Knowledge of community health resources and agencies.
  • Ability to make long-range plans for community health services.
  • Accountable for own decisions regarding patient care.
  • Identifies impending changes in patient condition, communicates to supervisory provider as needed.
  • Ability to plan, develop, implement and evaluate community health programs.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective relationships with others.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with patients, parents, physicians and other health care professionals.
  • Ability to maintain records and prepare reports.
  • Advanced interpersonal skills necessary to communicate effectively with all members of the interdisciplinary team to enhance collaboration and problem-solving, and to communicate diplomatically and thoroughly with parents, teachers, and school staff.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, in order to provide information to patients and health care personnel.
  • Ability to function effectively in a fluid, dynamic, and rapidly changing environment.

 

Technical qualifications or specialized certifications: BLS certification, Active Maryland RN license

 

Ability to: move objects up to 20 pounds; move about school building (~250,000 sq. ft. total) for emergency response; consistently operate a computer and other office productivity machinery, such as a copy machine and computer printer; stand up to 75% of the workday.
