    • Assigns numeric and alphanumeric codes to medical diagnoses and procedures for all outpatient encounters.
    • Ensures there is a complete clinical data set, and that clinical documentation supports assigned diagnoses and procedures.
    • Queries medical staff when documentation is not complete or unclear.
    • Maintains various databases and audits reports produced internally and by third party billing services.
    • Keeps abreast of changes in coding guidelines and complex federal (CMS) and commercial insurance carrier regulations.
    • Serves as backup to billing/compliance manager on technical questions and decisions related to clinical documentation and patient billing.




    • Requires high school diploma or equivalent. Associates degree preferred.
    • Minimum of two (2) years related clinical outpatient coding experience is required.
    • At least three (3) years in a medical setting obtaining referrals and working on patients’ coordination of care is preferred.
    • Requires Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) certification. CPC,CCS/P preferred.
    • Requires comprehensive knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and all body systems and complete understanding of the unique functions of assigned clinical area.
    • Requires college-level Medical Terminology, ICD-9-CM coding/ CPT coding.
    • Requires comprehensive understanding of clinical documentation standards related to departmental activities.
    • Requires proficiency in abstracting and data entry into all data bases used for clinical documentation. Must be able to demonstrate coding principles.
    • Requires analytical ability to allow for interpretation of clinical data in assigned clinical specialty to determine appropriate codes to assign diagnoses and procedures.
    • Strong written, oral communication and interpersonal skills are required. Ability to effectively communicate with all internal and external practitioners is essential.
    • Data entry skills and ability to transcribe medical dictation.
    • Requires analytical ability in order to complete tasks assigned, gather and interpret data form different courses, and resolve problems
